New work from Lynn Kurteff explores how the brain processes the sounds we make when we speak. Specific neural populations in the auditory cortex preferentially respond to the onset of speech sounds, and these responses are suppressed when speaking. However, insula responses were present both during listening and speaking, suggesting a different role for this area.
